Overview

ND0601 is an experimental transdermal patch formulation of levodopa developed by NeuroDerm for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It was designed to provide continuous, controlled delivery of levodopa through the skin to maintain stable therapeutic levels in the blood, thereby reducing the "off" periods and motor fluctuations associated with intermittent oral dosing. Levodopa acts as a prodrug for dopamine, crossing the blood-brain barrier where it is decarboxylated to dopamine to compensate for the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the striatum. Development of the patch formulation was discontinued in favor of NeuroDerm's liquid levodopa/carbidopa infusion systems (e.g., ND0612), which provided more consistent and higher plasma concentrations required for advanced patients.
