NDAN-BDTO (Non-Demented with Alzheimer's Neuropathology Brain-Derived Tau Oligomers) refers to a specific type of tau oligomer isolated from the brains of individuals who exhibit extensive Alzheimer's disease pathology but no clinical signs of dementia. These oligomers are characterized by significantly reduced synaptic and neuronal toxicity both ex vivo and in vivo compared to tau oligomers derived from Alzheimer's disease patients. Studies have shown that NDAN-BDTO can preserve autophagy, induce a robust antioxidant response, and promote highly phagocytic microglia, leading to improved memory retention in animal models. The findings suggest that NDAN-BDTO represents a non-toxic form of tau oligomer that could offer a therapeutic strategy by converting toxic tau oligomers into less harmful forms to halt Alzheimer's disease progression.
