Overview

NDRG1 plasmid is an experimental genetic construct used in molecular biology and oncology research to overexpress the N-myc downstream-regulated gene-1 (NDRG1) protein. NDRG1 is a member of the NDRG family and is known to play a complex, often tissue-specific role in cancer, frequently acting as a metastasis suppressor by inhibiting pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin, TGF-β, and PI3K/AKT. In research settings, transfection with an NDRG1 plasmid allows scientists to study the effects of high NDRG1 levels on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. For instance, in head and neck cancer (HNC) models, it has been shown to suppress growth while potentially increasing invasion in certain contexts. While NDRG1 itself is a target for therapeutic induction (e.g., by thiosemicarbazones), the plasmid form is primarily a laboratory tool rather than a clinical drug candidate.
