NDV-HXP-S-KP.2 is an intranasal mucosal vaccine candidate designed to prevent COVID-19, developed by CastleVax in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The vaccine employs a recombinant Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vector, which is an avian virus that does not cause disease in humans, to express a highly stabilized version of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein known as HexaPro (HXP-S). This specific iteration is updated to include the spike protein sequence from the KP.2 variant, a descendant of the JN.1 lineage. Administered via a nasal spray, the vaccine is intended to elicit robust mucosal immunity, including secretory IgA in the respiratory tract, which may provide better protection against infection and transmission compared to traditional systemic mRNA or protein-based vaccines.
