Nearlea

Nearlea is an ophthalmic solution containing 1.25% pilocarpine hydrochloride, developed by Laboratorios Elea Phoenix for the treatment of presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision). It acts as a cholinergic muscarinic agonist that works through two primary mechanisms: it contracts the iris sphincter muscle to induce miosis (pupil constriction), which creates a pinhole effect that increases depth of focus, and it contracts the ciliary muscle to enhance the eye's ability to accommodate for near vision. Administered as a once-daily eye drop, Nearlea provides improvement in near vision for approximately 6 to 8 hours without significantly affecting distance vision. It was approved by the FDA in 2021 and subsequently by Argentina's ANMAT in 2025, representing the first pharmacological treatment for presbyopia available in Argentina.
