Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nebido (testosterone undecanoate) is a long-acting intramuscular injectable androgen replacement therapy developed by Bayer for the treatment of male hypogonadism. It consists of the undecanoate ester of testosterone, which acts as a prodrug. Following intramuscular injection, the drug forms a depot in the muscle tissue from which it is slowly released and hydrolyzed by endogenous esterases into active testosterone. The released testosterone binds to the androgen receptor, a nuclear receptor that functions as a transcription factor to regulate the expression of genes involved in the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics, bone density, and muscle mass. Nebido is specifically designed to provide stable, physiological levels of testosterone over an extended period, typically requiring injections only every 10 to 14 weeks, thereby avoiding the peak-and-trough fluctuations associated with shorter-acting testosterone esters.
