Overview

Nebularine is a naturally occurring purine nucleoside analog, structurally similar to adenosine but lacking an amino group at the C6 position. It acts as a potent inhibitor of adenosine deaminase, thereby interfering with the metabolism of adenosines and affecting DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis. Nebularine exhibits cytotoxic properties and has demonstrated anticancer activity in preclinical studies, particularly against certain lymphoid malignancies. Additionally, it shows anti-mycobacterial (including tuberculostatic), antifungal, and antiviral (notably anti-herpes) activities. Its mechanism involves inhibition of DNA/RNA synthesis as well as direct enzyme inhibition[1][3][5][9].
