Overview

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. In this specific context, it is being evaluated as a nebulized adjuvant therapy to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in very low birth weight preterm infants. BPD is a chronic lung disease often resulting from mechanical ventilation and oxygen therapy. Azithromycin's mechanism in BPD is thought to involve the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the inhibition of *Ureaplasma* species, which are associated with increased BPD risk. The trial is conducted by Alexandria University using the brand Xithrone.
