Nebulized enriched heparin is an investigational formulation of high molecular weight heparin being developed by UPECLIN HC FM Botucatu Unesp for the treatment of non-critical COVID-19 patients. Administered via inhalation, this biologic agent acts through multiple mechanisms: it serves as an antiviral by potentially binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to block viral entry, provides anti-inflammatory effects, and functions as an anticoagulant to prevent pulmonary micro-thrombosis. A Phase I/II triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted in 2021 demonstrated that the treatment was safe and showed potential therapeutic benefits, including a significant reduction in the need for supplemental oxygen and improved respiratory parameters in patients with mild pneumonia.
