Nedocromil is a small molecule anti-inflammatory agent classified as a mast cell stabilizer. It is used to prevent symptoms of asthma and allergic conjunctivitis. Inhaled nedocromil reduces the number and severity of asthma attacks by inhibiting the activation and degranulation of inflammatory cells such as mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, monocytes, and platelets in the lungs. This prevents the release of mediators like histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and tryptase that contribute to airway inflammation and bronchospasm[1][2][5][7][9]. Ophthalmic formulations are used for allergic conjunctivitis by preventing mast cell degranulation in ocular tissues[3][10]. The drug does not provide relief for acute asthma or allergy attacks but is effective when used regularly as prophylaxis.
