Overview
Neem extract gel is a botanical drug delivery system derived from the *Azadirachta indica* tree, currently being evaluated by Ain Shams University as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (scaling and root planing) for the treatment of localized periodontitis. The gel is formulated for local drug delivery and is applied subgingivally into periodontal pockets. Its therapeutic efficacy in periodontal disease is attributed to the antibacterial properties of azadirachtin, which disrupts bacterial cell walls, and its anti-inflammatory effects mediated through the inhibition of prostaglandins. As a natural product, it is being investigated as a cost-effective and safe alternative to synthetic local drug delivery systems in dental care.
