Neem Mouthrinse

Neem Mouthrinse is an investigational herbal mouthwash containing an extract of neem leaf (*Azadirachta indica*), developed by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for the management of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating side effect of radiation therapy in head and neck cancer patients, characterized by inflammation and ulceration of the oral mucosa. The therapeutic potential of neem leaf extract in this condition is attributed to its rich content of bioactive compounds, including limonoids like nimbin and azadirachtin, which exhibit potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. The mechanism of action involves the suppression of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, such as NF-kappaB, and the reduction of oxidative stress, thereby protecting the mucosal lining and promoting healing.
