Overview

Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain FA1090 is a well-characterized laboratory strain of the bacterium that causes gonorrhea, used specifically as a bacterial challenge agent in controlled human infection model (CHIM) studies. In trials conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a suspension of this strain is administered intraurethrally to healthy male volunteers to experimentally induce a localized urethral infection. This model serves as a research tool to evaluate the efficacy of preventative measures, such as the 4C-MenB (Bexsero) vaccine, in providing cross-protection against Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Originally isolated from a cervical sample of a patient with disseminated gonococcal infection, FA1090 is chosen for its established safety profile and predictable clinical course in experimental settings.
