Overview

Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain FA1090 A26 is a specific wild-type isolate of the Gram-negative bacterium *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*, the causative agent of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. It is utilized by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in Phase 1 experimental human infection models (such as the LptA Trial) to study the pathogenesis of gonococcal infections. In these clinical studies, the strain is administered intraurethrally to healthy male volunteers to establish a controlled infection, serving as a positive control to benchmark the infectivity and inflammatory response of engineered mutant strains. By identifying which bacterial components are essential for establishing infection in the male urethra, researchers aim to discover and validate potential targets for future vaccine candidates.
