Overview

Neisseria lactamica is an experimental live bacterial intervention being developed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with the University of Southampton. [18] It consists of a harmless commensal bacterium, *Neisseria lactamica*, that naturally colonizes the human nasopharynx. The intervention is administered via nasal inoculation to prevent colonization by the pathogenic bacteria *Neisseria meningitidis*, which causes meningococcal disease. Its mechanism of action is competitive inhibition, where *N. lactamica* displaces existing *N. meningitidis* and prevents new acquisition of the pathogen. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial, the 'Lactamica 2' study (NCT02249598), demonstrated that *N. lactamica* successfully inhibited meningococcal carriage in university students. [13] It is being investigated as a potential novel bacterial medicine to suppress meningococcal outbreaks.
