Overview

Neisseria lactamica Y92-1009 is a specific wild-type strain of the commensal bacterium Neisseria lactamica. It has been developed as a live biotherapeutic product for nasal inoculation to induce colonization of the upper respiratory tract. This strain is being investigated primarily for its ability to safely colonize humans and potentially confer protection against pathogenic Neisseria meningitidis by stimulating immune responses and altering the nasopharyngeal microbiome. In preclinical studies, immunization with live N. lactamica strains including Y92-1009 elicited functional immune responses such as serum bactericidal activity (SBA) against meningococcal antigens when administered as a live organism[2][3]. The mechanism involves induction of polyclonal B cell proliferation via outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), which selectively stimulate mitogenic proliferation in B cells[4]. The safety profile of this strain is well characterized; over 400 adults have been inoculated in clinical studies without significant adverse events[3]. The product LyoNlac is manufactured under GMP-like standards and used in controlled human infection models to study maternal-infant transmission and microbiome effects during pregnancy[3].
