Neisseria meningitidis group W135 oligosaccharide conjugate (CRM197) is a specific conjugate vaccine component designed to provide active immunity against meningococcal disease caused by serogroup W-135. It consists of the capsular oligosaccharide of the W-135 strain covalently linked to the CRM197 carrier protein, a non-toxic mutant of the diphtheria toxin. This conjugation process is critical for converting the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, which allows for the induction of immunological memory and a robust immune response in infants and young children. This component was primarily developed by Novartis Vaccines (now part of GSK) and is a key constituent of the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine Menveo (MenACWY-CRM).
