Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B recombinant LP2086 B01 protein variant antigen is a component of a sterile vaccine for intramuscular injection indicated for the active immunization to prevent invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. The key active ingredient is a recombinant form of the factor H binding protein (fHBP), specifically the LP2086 lipoprotein, which exists in two subfamilies to ensure broad protection against diverse strains. The mechanism of action involves eliciting antibodies that target fHBP on the surface of N. meningitidis, leading to complement-mediated bactericidal activity and prevention of infection. This approach was developed due to poor immunogenicity from polysaccharide-based vaccines and limited strain coverage from outer membrane vesicle vaccines[1][2][5][7]. The bivalent formulation (as in Trumenba) includes two variants from each fHBP subfamily for broader coverage[2][7].
