Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This vaccine is designed to provide active immunization against invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups C and Y. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides from these two serogroups, which are chemically linked (conjugated) to tetanus toxoid. The tetanus toxoid acts as a carrier protein, enhancing the immune response to the polysaccharides, particularly in infants and young children, by converting a T-cell independent immune response into a T-cell dependent one. This leads to a more robust and longer-lasting production of protective antibodies. While this specific bivalent (C+Y) tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine may exist as a standalone product or have been studied, it is commonly found as a component within broader combination vaccines, such as the trivalent Haemophilus influenzae type b-Neisseria meningitidis serogroups C and Y-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (HibMenCY-TT, brand name MenHibrix) or quadrivalent meningococcal vaccines (MenACWY-TT, e.g., Nimenrix, MenQuadfi) that also include serogroups A and W-135.
