Overview

Nelonicline (ABT-126) is a potent and selective agonist of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It was developed as an investigational small molecule drug with putative procognitive effects for the treatment of cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Despite favorable pharmacokinetic properties and tolerability in clinical trials, ABT-126 did not demonstrate significant efficacy compared to placebo in improving cognitive outcomes in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease or schizophrenia. As a result, further development for these indications was discontinued[1][3][5].
