Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nelumbo nucifera leaf extract (NnEx) is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the sacred lotus plant, containing bioactive compounds such as quercetin, nuciferine, catechin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin. It is primarily investigated for its anti-obesity and metabolic regulatory effects, which it achieves by promoting lipolysis through the inhibition of the cAMP pathway and downregulating the expression of fibroblast growth factor 15 (FGF15) and farnesoid X receptor (FXR) in intestinal tissues. Additionally, NnEx exhibits hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties, reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting hepatocellular carcinogenesis by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, and by downregulating the expression of Rac1, PKCα, and GSTπ. Research in animal models suggests its potential in managing type II diabetes and related lifestyle diseases by modulating fat and sugar absorption.
