Neo-Penotran Forte

Neo-Penotran Forte is a fixed-dose combination vaginal suppository containing the antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent metronidazole (500 mg) and the antifungal agent miconazole nitrate (100 mg). It is indicated for the treatment of mixed vaginal infections, including trichomonas vaginitis (vaginal trichomoniasis), bacterial vaginosis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis. Metronidazole exerts its effect by disrupting DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as *Trichomonas vaginalis*, while miconazole nitrate inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, leading to increased permeability and cell death. The University of Alabama at Birmingham conducted a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01361048) to evaluate the efficacy of this intravaginal combination specifically for the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis compared to standard oral metronidazole therapy.
