Overview

NeoCart is an autologous, restorative cell therapy candidate designed for the treatment of knee articular cartilage defects. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own chondrocytes, which are then expanded and seeded onto a collagen-based hydrogel scaffold. This construct is matured in a specialized exogenous tissue processor that mimics the physiological environment of the joint (applying pressure and low oxygen) to produce a functional cartilage-like tissue prior to surgical implantation. Originally developed by Histogenics Corporation, the asset was later acquired by Ocugen through its subsidiary OrthoCellix. The product has reached Phase 3 clinical development, aiming to provide a superior restorative option compared to existing cartilage repair treatments.
