Overview

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used primarily to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections and to manage hepatic coma, a complication of liver disease. It acts by binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. In hepatic coma, it reduces the population of ammonia-producing gut bacteria, improving neurological symptoms. Neomycin is active against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but has no antifungal activity. It is available in oral (tablet, solution) and topical forms[1][2][3][4][5].
