Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates Solution for Irrigation is a concentrated sterile antibiotic solution designed for urinary bladder irrigation. It contains neomycin sulfate and polymyxin B sulfate, typically diluted in an isotonic saline solution for intravesical administration during procedures like cystoscopy. Neomycin, an aminoglycoside, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, while polymyxin B, a polypeptide antibiotic, increases the permeability of bacterial cell membranes. This combination provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against susceptible organisms. It is indicated for short-term use to help prevent bacteriuria and gram-negative rod septicemia associated with indwelling catheters. A clinical trial (NCT03099863) investigated its effectiveness as an intraoperative irrigant during elective pelvic floor surgery with cystoscopy to reduce postoperative urinary tract infections, but found no significant reduction in UTI rates.
