Overview
Neomycin sulfate + bacitracin zinc + polymyxin b is a fixed-dose **topical ophthalmic triple-antibiotic** combination composed of three small-molecule anti-infectives: neomycin, an aminoglycoside that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis at the 30S ribosomal subunit; bacitracin, a polypeptide antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis; and polymyxin b, a cationic polypeptide that disrupts the outer membrane of susceptible gram-negative bacteria. The product is used as an ophthalmic ointment for superficial bacterial infections of the external eye and its adnexa, including conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis caused by susceptible organisms. It is an established marketed generic combination, with human products sold under brands such as Neosporin and Neo-Polycin and veterinary-labeled products also available.
