Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + dexamethasone + polymyxin b is a marketed ophthalmic combination drug comprising two antibacterial agents and a corticosteroid. Neomycin and polymyxin b provide broad topical ocular antibacterial coverage by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and disrupting bacterial cell membrane integrity, respectively, while dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid receptor agonist that suppresses ocular inflammation, edema, redness, and itching. The product is used for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions when bacterial infection is present or when the risk of bacterial ocular infection is high, including conjunctival and corneal inflammation, chronic anterior uveitis, and corneal injury from chemical, radiation, thermal burns, or foreign body penetration. It is marketed in ophthalmic suspension and ophthalmic ointment forms under brands such as Maxitrol and is an approved prescription small-molecule ophthalmic anti-infective steroid combination.
