Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + gramicidin + polymyxin b is a prescription **topical ophthalmic combination antibiotic** formulated as a sterile eye-drop solution for superficial bacterial infections of the external eye and its adnexa. The product combines **neomycin**, an aminoglycoside that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit, with **polymyxin B**, a membrane-active polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts the bacterial cell membrane of susceptible organisms, and **gramicidin**, a peptide antibiotic that increases membrane permeability and is particularly active against gram-positive bacteria. It has been marketed under brands including Neosporin Ophthalmic and related trade names, and is used for conditions such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
