Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + hydrocortisone + bacitracin zinc + polymyxin b is a marketed **combination ophthalmic ointment** that combines three topical antibiotics with a corticosteroid for **steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions when bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of bacterial infection**. The antibacterial components act through complementary mechanisms: **neomycin** binds the bacterial ribosome and inhibits protein synthesis, **polymyxin b** disrupts susceptible bacterial cell membranes, and **bacitracin zinc** inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis; **hydrocortisone** activates the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress ocular inflammation. The product has been marketed under the brand **Cortisporin** and is indicated for inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, including infective conjunctivitis, chronic anterior uveitis, and ocular injury from chemical, thermal, or radiation burns or foreign body penetration.
