Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + hydrocortisone + polymyxin b is a marketed topical anti-infective and anti-inflammatory combination product used in **ophthalmic** and **otic** formulations. The combination contains two antibiotics, neomycin and polymyxin b, plus the corticosteroid hydrocortisone. Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the bacterial ribosome, polymyxin b disrupts susceptible bacterial cell membranes, and hydrocortisone activates the glucocorticoid receptor to reduce local inflammation, edema, and erythema. The product is indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection or risk of bacterial ocular infection exists, and for superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal including certain post-surgical ear-cavity infections. It is an approved prescription pharmaceutical with multiple branded and generic presentations, historically commercialized under brands such as Cortisporin and Otosporin, and ownership of key branded rights has passed through Monarch Pharmaceuticals, JHP Pharmaceuticals, Par Pharmaceutical, and Endo International.
