Neomycin sulfate + polymyxin B sulfate + gramicidin is a combination antibiotic ophthalmic solution used to treat superficial bacterial infections of the external eye and its adnexa. The three antibiotics provide broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage by targeting both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. - **Neomycin** is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomal RNA and causing misreading of the bacterial genetic code. - **Polymyxin B** is a polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts the outer cell membrane of gram-negative bacteria by interacting with membrane phospholipids, increasing permeability and leading to cell death. - **Gramicidin** is a peptide antibiotic active mainly against gram-positive bacteria; it increases membrane permeability to inorganic cations by forming channels in the lipid bilayer. This combination is primarily indicated for conjunctivitis (pink eye), keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria[1][3][4][5]. It may not be effective against all pathogens due to possible resistance.
