Overview

Neonatal allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells harvested from neonatal tissues, including the umbilical cord, cord blood, or placenta. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell types and, more importantly, their potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. As an allogeneic therapy, they are sourced from healthy donors and can be manufactured as off-the-shelf products. Their therapeutic effect is primarily mediated by the secretome—a complex mixture of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that modulate the immune response and stimulate endogenous repair mechanisms. In clinical development, these cells are being investigated for their potential to mitigate the inflammatory damage associated with neonatal diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Leading programs, such as Medipost's PNEUMOSTEM, have demonstrated safety and signals of efficacy in early-phase clinical trials.
