Neosaxitoxin is a potent, naturally occurring neurotoxin belonging to the paralytic shellfish toxin group. It is structurally related to saxitoxin and acts as a selective, reversible blocker of voltage-gated sodium channels in neurons. By binding to these channels, neosaxitoxin prevents the influx of sodium ions necessary for action potential propagation, leading to inhibition of neuronal transmission and potentially paralysis. Neosaxitoxin has been investigated as a long-acting local anesthetic due to its ability to block nerve conduction with high specificity. It is currently under clinical investigation for use as a local anesthetic[5][1].
