Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neosporin Original Triple Antibiotic Ointment is a topical antibiotic combination product developed and manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. It contains three active ingredients: bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, and polymyxin B sulfate, formulated in a petroleum jelly base. This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Neomycin is an aminoglycoside that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to ribosomal RNA; polymyxin B increases bacterial cell membrane permeability by interacting with phospholipid components; and bacitracin interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis. The product is primarily indicated for the prevention of infection in minor skin injuries, including cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is available over-the-counter and is widely recognized as a leading brand in topical wound care.
