Overview
Neossance Squalane is a high-purity, sustainably sourced emollient produced through the fermentation of sugarcane using proprietary yeast strains. Originally developed by Amyris and now part of the Givaudan portfolio, it serves as a renewable, high-performance alternative to squalane derived from shark liver oil or olives. Chemically, it is a saturated C30 hydrocarbon (2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyltetracosane) that is identical to the squalane naturally found in human sebum. Its primary mechanism of action is the restoration of the skin's lipid barrier, where it acts as an occlusive to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and as an emollient to soften and soothe the skin. It is highly stable, non-comedogenic, and widely used in topical dermatological and cosmetic formulations to treat dry skin conditions and improve overall skin health.
