Neovasculgen variant 3 is a plasmid-based gene therapy candidate developed by Artgen for the treatment of vascular conditions requiring the development of collateral circulation, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic limb ischemia (CLI). The therapeutic consists of a plasmid DNA vector designed to encode the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein. Upon intramuscular administration into ischemic tissues, the plasmid is internalized by cells, which then express and secrete VEGF. This localized production of VEGF stimulates angiogenesis and the formation of collateral blood vessels, thereby improving perfusion and oxygenation in the affected limb. Variant 3 represents a specific iteration or optimization within Artgen's Nextgen gene therapy platform, building upon the technology used in the original approved Neovasculgen product.
