Neovasculgen variant 5 is a plasmid-based gene therapy developed by Artgen (formerly Human Stem Cells Institute) for the treatment of vascular conditions requiring the development of collateral circulation, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic limb ischemia (CLI). The therapy consists of a circular DNA molecule (plasmid) containing the gene for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Upon intramuscular injection, the plasmid is taken up by local cells, leading to the expression of the VEGF protein. This protein acts as a potent inducer of angiogenesis, stimulating the growth of new blood vessels from existing ones to improve blood supply to ischemic tissues. This variant is part of Artgen's Nextgen platform and represents a next-generation iteration of the original Neovasculgen product, which was the first gene therapy for PAD approved in Russia.
