Neoveil is a bioabsorbable synthetic polymer mesh composed of polyglycolic acid (PGA) felt, primarily used as a reinforcing material for sutures and anastomoses in various surgical procedures. In the context of pancreatic surgery, specifically the PLANET-PJ trial led by the University of Toyama, Neoveil was evaluated as a double-layer reinforcement during pancreaticojejunostomy to mitigate the risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF). The technique involves placing 0.3-mm thick PGA felt on the pancreatic parenchyma and 0.15-mm thick felt around the anastomosis, often secured with fibrin glue. Despite its intended mechanical support, a Phase III randomized controlled trial demonstrated that this specific reinforcement method did not significantly lower the incidence of grade B or C POPF compared to standard surgical techniques.
