Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neovletta is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) consisting of 30 μg ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and 150 μg levonorgestrel, a second-generation progestin. Developed and manufactured by Bayer, it is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. The drug's mechanism of action involves the suppression of ovulation by inhibiting the release of gonadotropins, specifically luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), from the anterior pituitary gland. Additionally, Neovletta induces changes in the cervical mucus to increase its viscosity, thereby inhibiting sperm penetration, and alters the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Neovletta was the specific contraceptive agent used in the P-piller101 trial conducted by Karolinska University Hospital, which investigated the causal effects of combined oral contraceptives on mood, sexuality, and economic behavior in healthy women.
