NephroFortis is a preclinical-stage small molecule nephroprotector being developed by TRIZ Biopharma International. It is specifically designed to prevent drug-induced nephrotoxicity and acute kidney injury (AKI), particularly damage caused by polymyxin antibiotics. The drug's mechanism of action involves binding to the megalin receptor (LRP2) in kidney proximal tubule cells with a higher affinity than nephrotoxic agents like polymyxins. By competitively binding to this receptor, NephroFortis blocks the uptake of these toxins into the kidney cells, thereby reducing cellular damage and preventing AKI. Proof-of-concept has been demonstrated in preclinical animal studies, and the company is currently seeking funding to support an Investigational New Drug (IND) filing.
