Overview

Nepic is an autologous cultivated limbal epithelial cell sheet developed by Japan Tissue Engineering Co., Ltd. (J-TEC) in collaboration with Osaka University. It is a regenerative medicine product indicated for the treatment of unilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition characterized by the loss of corneal stem cells leading to corneal opacity and vision loss. The production process involves harvesting a small biopsy of limbal tissue from the patient's healthy eye, from which limbal stem cells are isolated and cultivated on temperature-responsive culture surfaces under GMP conditions to form a cohesive cell sheet. This sheet is then surgically transplanted onto the patient's diseased eye after the removal of scar tissue (fibrovascular pannus). Nepic was approved in Japan in 2020 as the first regenerative medicine product in the ophthalmology field.
