Overview

**Neriifolin** is a plant-derived cardenolide (cardiac glycoside) found in species such as Cerbera odollam and Thevetia neriifolia, structurally related to the digitalis class of cardiac glycosides[1][4]. It inhibits the Na+/K+-ATPase (sodium-potassium pump), leading to increased intracellular calcium, causing positive inotropic effects in cardiac tissue (cardiotonic action), and can induce cell apoptosis[3][4][6]. Preclinical studies have shown anti-cancer activity through apoptosis in breast, ovarian, colorectal, and skin cancer lines and neuroprotective effects in models of ischemic stroke[3][4][6]. Neriifolin is considered a toxin due to its ability to induce cardiac arrhythmia and death in high doses, similar to other cardiac glycosides[1][4].
