Nerindocianine (formerly known as IRDye 800BK) is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging agent developed by LI-COR Biosciences for use as a surgical aid. It is a synthetic cyanine dye designed to improve the intraoperative visualization and delineation of urologic anatomy, specifically the ureters, during minimally invasive abdominal and pelvic surgeries. Unlike indocyanine green (ICG), which is primarily cleared by the liver, nerindocianine is cleared by the kidneys and excreted into the urine. This renal clearance profile allows for real-time fluorescence imaging of the urinary tract using NIR camera systems, helping surgeons identify and avoid accidental ureteral injury during complex procedures such as colorectal, gynecological, or urological surgeries. The agent is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to establish its safety and efficacy in delineating abdominopelvic ureter anatomy.
