Nerve Growth Factor 2.5S (NGF 2.5S) is a purified murine-derived protein therapeutic isolated from mouse submaxillary glands. It represents the biologically active beta-subunit dimer of the NGF complex. As a member of the neurotrophin family, NGF 2.5S acts as a potent agonist for the high-affinity tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) and the low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). In clinical research, particularly in Phase 2 trials conducted by the Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, it is being investigated as a neuroprotective ophthalmic solution for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The drug aims to mitigate inner retinal dysfunction and preserve photoreceptor activity. It is often studied in combination with other neuroprotective agents like coenzyme Q10.
