Overview

Neural stem cell-derived exosomes are nano-sized extracellular vesicles (30–200 nm) secreted by neural stem cells (NSCs). These exosomes contain a variety of bioactive molecules including proteins, lipids, mRNAs, and microRNAs. They mediate intercellular communication and have demonstrated neuroprotective effects by promoting neurogenesis, angiogenesis, anti-apoptotic activity, anti-inflammatory responses, and repair of the blood-brain barrier. Mechanistically, they facilitate differentiation and maturation of neurons and glial cells—partly via delivery of specific miRNAs such as miR-9 or miR-124-3p—and can be engineered to deliver therapeutic agents like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier makes them promising candidates for treating central nervous system diseases such as ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's disease[1][2][3][5][6].
