Overview

NTPI (Neurotropin Injection) is a biological drug developed by Nippon Zoki Pharmaceutical, derived from the extract of inflamed skin of rabbits inoculated with vaccinia virus. It has been used in Japan for several decades, primarily for the treatment of chronic pain conditions such as post-herpetic neuralgia and neuropathic pain, as well as allergic rhinitis. The drug's mechanism of action is complex and involves the activation of the descending pain inhibitory system (specifically the serotonergic and noradrenergic pathways) and the induction of neurotrophic factors like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). In the context of Alzheimer's disease, NTPI is being investigated in Phase II clinical trials for its potential to alleviate behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) through its neuroprotective and neurotransmitter-modulating properties.
