Neutral electrolyzed water (NEW) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial solution generated through the electrolysis of a dilute sodium chloride solution in a specialized chamber where the pH is maintained near neutral (typically 6.5–7.5). Its primary antimicrobial component is hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which exists in its most active, non-dissociated form at this pH. NEW is characterized by its high biocompatibility, low toxicity, and lack of corrosiveness compared to acidic electrolyzed water, making it suitable for both clinical and food industry applications. In medical settings, it is utilized for chronic wound irrigation, dental hygiene, nasopharyngeal decontamination, and as an adjunct therapy for gastric infections. Its mechanism of action involves the rapid induction of oxidative stress, leading to the disruption of microbial cell membranes, denaturation of structural and functional proteins, and damage to nucleic acids.
