Neutral Protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin, also known as isophane insulin, is an intermediate-acting human insulin formulation used to manage blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. It is produced by complexing recombinant human insulin with protamine and zinc, which delays its absorption and extends its duration of action to approximately 10–16 hours. In the context of the Assiut University study (NCT03835390), NPH is evaluated as part of a conventional insulin regimen in pregnant women with pre-gestational diabetes. The study compares this conventional approach against basal-bolus regimens using insulin analogues to determine the impact on maternal and fetal outcomes, such as glycemic control and the incidence of macrosomia.
