Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neutrox is a proprietary, stable formulation of 0.01% pure hypochlorous acid (HOCl) developed by NovaBay Pharmaceuticals. It serves as the active component in Avenova, a prescription-strength eyelid and eyelash cleanser. Neutrox is distinguished by its high purity and stability, remaining effective for up to three years in amber glass containers, whereas many other hypochlorous acid products contain impurities like sodium hypochlorite (bleach) that reduce shelf life and cause irritation. As a small molecule antimicrobial, Neutrox mimics the natural defense mechanism of human white blood cells (neutrophils) by producing HOCl to neutralize bacteria, viruses, and fungi, as well as the toxins they produce. It is primarily used in ophthalmology to manage conditions such as blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye syndrome by reducing the microbial load on the ocular surface without damaging sensitive tissues.
