Overview
Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. It works by binding directly to the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme and inhibiting its RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities, thereby blocking viral replication. Nevirapine is not effective against HIV-2. It is indicated for use in adults and children as young as 15 days old and may also be used to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV during childbirth. Resistance can develop rapidly if used as monotherapy or if viral replication is not fully suppressed[1][2][3][5].
